Get lost! That’s the unequivocal message to car thieves from police and South East Essex Community Safety Initiatives (SEECSI) who have jointly launched a campaign to combat the theft of satellite navigation systems from vehicles.
More than 30 buses on routes throughout Southend, Castle Point and Rochford district are carrying eye-catching advertisements driving home the fact that not taking car security seriously can cost motorists money in the long run.
In addition to the bus backs, the message is being repeated on some 135,000 tickets at car parks throughout Southend.
More than 100 Sat-navs have been stolen across the Southend, Castle Point and Rochford districts over the past four months, making them second only to car audio equipment as the most commonly items stolen.
Chief Inspector John Walker of the South Eastern Division of Essex Police said: “The growing popularity of satellite navigation systems means that they have become highly prized targets for criminals.
“We want to remind motorists that their car is a shop window to the thief. Sat-navs are expensive items and leaving a system clearly visible in the vehicle is simply asking for it to be taken. No one would leave a handful of five pound notes on the dashboard, and that’s the message we want to get across to drivers.” |
